    The Search Box
If you’re not using Facebook’s search box, you’re really missing out.
There are two ways to use the search box:

Find YOUR stuff - Want to find a friend without digging through friends lists? Just start typing their name. After a few letters, you’ll see them below the box. This also works with Pages you’re a fan of, Groups you’re a member of, and Apps you use (FarmVille?).
Find OTHER stuff - Looking for Pages or Groups to join? Trying to find a long lost friend? Type anything in the box and hit enter and you’ll be brought to the results page. You can filter the results on the left side of the page to narrow your findings.

If you do nothing else today, make sure you click “View Live Feed” on your homepage!
With so many complaints about the new design, I thought I’d share a quick tip on how to bring back some of the old Facebook design.
All you have to do is click the “View Live Feed” link at the top of your wall, and it will switch to the old view so you don’t miss your friends’ most current updates. Once you click that link, it will be set as your default until you switch back.
If you look at the picture, you’ll notice my New News Feed hasn’t been updated since yesterday. As far as I’m concerned, this was a horrible decision on Facebook’s part, but at least we have the option to switch back.

Why the New FB Design Sucks for Marketing

There are a few things missing from Facebook’s new design (publicly launched today), and these changes could hurt you if you use FB as a marketing tool in any sense. Don’t get me wrong…FB should be about personal relationships, but it can also be an effective tool for growing a business.

In the last design, the right sidebar had a list of “Highlights.” These were popular posts from your friends that FB thought you might find interesting. Those are now gone. From a marketing perspective, if you posted something about your business, and any friends liked it and commented on it, it would show up in a large number of users’ sidebars (friends or not). This was a great way to help spread your content, and now it’s gone. Facebook’s answer is the new default view of the wall. Problem is, you can now post something, and the majority of your friends will not even see it.

There are other features missing that I’ll discuss later, but this is one of the biggest pitfalls of the new design from a marketing perspective.

Do ‘tag’ your friends in pictures
When you post a new picture, or just come across one a friend has posted, for that matter, you have the opportunity to “tag” the folks that appear in it. By doing so, you include that image in that particular friend’s “Photos of…” section. This function is a particular boon to friends who do not own cameras and might not otherwise have many pictures on the site. Your buddy will always be grateful for a tagged picture, unless, of course, it features him with his eyes closed or was taken when he was going through that awkward trying-to-grow-a-moustache phase in junior high school. • Access Facebook from your phone
Just because you’re not on your computer doesn’t mean you can’t get the latest status updates on or correspond with your friends. Both the iPhone and BlackBerry offer mobile-specific applications that let you interface with Facebook right on your handset (the iPhone app even lets you chat live with other Facebook friends). For anyone who doesn’t have those two phones, Facebook offers a less graphics-intensive mobile version of the service at m.facebook.com. (via Facebook 101: 25 Tips and Tricks

Facebook Testing New Access Points for Viral Communication Channels October 19th, 2009
Earlier today, we covered two upcoming changes to Facebook’s home page and News Feed: 1. Facebook is returning to a “Top News” stream as the default home page feed, pushing the real-time stream to a secondary tab. 2. Groups are now getting partial News Feed presence. Now, some users are seeing additional UI tests Facebook is running in the site’s header. In the tests, the header contains new icons for users to access Facebook’s core communication channels: notifications, requests, and messages. ui-test-1 The number of unread notifications, requests, or messages appears in a red bubble in the header, just as notifications do now in the site’s application bar at the bottom of the screen. By mousing over any one of the three new icons, users can access unread messages in a dropdown. ui-test-2 Given the prominence of the notification and request alerts, we would expect this change to increase viral channel engagement and conversion for app developers. However, three red balloons at the top of the screen may also seem daunting to some users who have many applications. “The navigation menu is just one of many things across the site that we’re testing in order to simplify and improve the user experience,” a Facebook spokesperson told us. Why Can’t I Access Facebook?
That’s the question an unknown number of Facebook users have been asking Facebook over the past week. Numerous users have been unable to access their account for the past 6 days and there doesn’t appear to be any end in site. I’ve personally had about 10 to 20 people contact me about the issue, however I get about 50 inquiries a day about personal Facebook issues, which is why this didn’t really stand out at first. However for accounts to be inaccessible for a week is a extremely uncommon. -Account Unavailable Message- As one person told us, “I am now on day 6 also..I am so sick of this. Are our accounts ever going to be restored??? Has anyone been able to get back on yet??? And further more I emailed FB about 20 times and never got any responses back…..” Another commenter said, “day 6 finished work early just so fed up! Oh farmville i miss you. As a pilot i really should be thinking about my flight but fb is all i think about HELP!!!” So when is Facebook coming back for these users? We have no idea. Earlier this week, Facebook told CNET, “We are currently experiencing a technical issue with one of our databases that is resulting in an extended period of maintenance for some users. We are working on a fix now and hope to have this resolved in the next 24 hours.” Since then there has been no update but many users still can’t access the site. The message these users receive are the standard: “Your account is temporarily unavailable due to site maintenance. It should be available again within a few hours. We apologize for the inconvenience.” Given that so many people are complaining makes me assume that at least a few thousand people have been effected, however it’s difficult to speculate since there has been few details provided by the company. Have you been able to access the site? Do you have any friends who’s accounts are unaccessible? (via Why Can’t I Access Facebook?
